About

The Flushing Area Historical Society was Established in 1973, and is now located at the historic Flushing Depot where it maintains the Flushing Area Museum. It uses our community museum to collect, acquire, preserve and interpret the history and cultural development of the area in and around Flushing, Michigan.

July 1888: Construction train reaches Flushing.

December 17, 1888: The first passenger train arrived from Saginaw.

1971: Passengers service to the Flushing Depot ends.

1973: brought two important events involving the depot, sale of the building and property, and formation of the group that would eventually restore that building. The Flushing Area Historical Society, which would play that role, was founded in 1973. Grand Trunk sold the depot and property, with the exception of the main line right-of-way, to Harry Herman and Robert Myers.

1975: the new owners convert the building into the ‘Depot Restaurant,” which became a popular dining place and lounge. The “pass-through” area was enclosed, and a cement block and brick kitchen was added at the southeast corner.

1979: the Depot is added to the State Register of Historic Sites by the State Historical Commission. The Society aided the owners in receiving this honor.

April 20, 1980 the Flushing Depot burns.

February 27, 1984, 3:05 p.m. – The depot belonged to the Historical Society when the deed was formally registered with Genesee County Clerk.

June 7, 1997 the Flushing Area Historical Society opens the Flushing Depot Museum.
