Preserving the History of the Flushing Area

The Flushing Area Historical Society is dedicated to collecting, preserving, and sharing photographs, documents, and artifacts that tell the story of Flushing and the surrounding community. For generations, local residents have played a vital role in safeguarding this history by sharing family photographs, personal stories, and meaningful objects.

The Society’s collections exist to ensure that Flushing’s people, places, and everyday life are remembered and made accessible for education, research, and public appreciation.

What We Collect

Photographs & Images

We actively seek historic photographs that document life in the Flushing area, including:

  • Individuals and families connected to Flushing
  • Homes, farms, businesses, and public buildings
  • Schools, churches, clubs, and civic organizations
  • Community events, celebrations, and daily life

Photographs help visually preserve our shared past and have long been an essential part of the Society’s publications and historical projects.

Artifacts & Objects

Artifacts provide a tangible link to earlier generations. We prefer items that have a direct link to Flushing, its people and history. Items of interest include:

  • Household items, tools, and furnishings
  • Business, agricultural, and industrial objects
  • Personal items connected to notable residents or families
  • Artwork, textiles, quilts, and commemorative pieces

Donating to the Collection

Ownership & Stewardship

Unless otherwise agreed in writing, items donated to the Flushing Area Historical Society become part of the Society’s permanent collection. The Society assumes responsibility for documenting, preserving, and storing donated materials according to their historical and physical needs.

The Importance of Documentation

An item’s story is just as important as the item itself. Information provided by donors helps ensure that future generations understand the historical significance and local context of each contribution.

Donation Form Checklist

When donating photographs, documents, or artifacts, please be prepared to provide the following information:

  • Donor name and contact information
  • Description of the item
  • Names of people associated with the item
  • Date or approximate time period
  • Location where the item was used or created
  • How the item relates to Flushing or the surrounding area
  • Any known stories, traditions, or historical background

This information becomes part of the Society’s permanent records and greatly enhances the historical value of each donation.

Image Submission Guidelines

If you are submitting photographs or images for possible inclusion on the Society’s website or in digital exhibits, please follow these guidelines:

  • Submit the highest‑resolution image available (scans preferred)
  • Avoid editing, cropping, or altering original images
  • Include names, dates, locations, and event details if known
  • Indicate whether the original photograph is available for scanning
  • Note any usage restrictions or preferred credit information

Digital images allow the Society to share Flushing’s history widely while protecting fragile originals from unnecessary handling.

Digital Access & Use

Selected photographs and artifacts from the collection are digitized and shared on the Flushing Area Historical Society website to support education, research, and public engagement. Materials are used for educational and non‑commercial purposes unless otherwise specified.

Why Your Contribution Matters

Community participation has always been central to preserving Flushing’s history. Every photograph, artifact, and story helps build a more complete picture of our shared past and ensures that it remains available for future generations.
