CPL Duane Dewey
U.S. Marine Corps
Grand Rapids, Michigan
Duane Dewey was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on November 16, 1931. He enlisted in the Marines on March 7, 1951. On April 16, 1952, an overwhelming Chinese force attacked Duane’s unit. Duane was being treated for wounds when a grenade landed near his position. He quickly yanked the Corpsman to the ground and jumped on the grenade yelling to the other Marines in the immediate area. Duane’s body took the blast from the grenade. Suffering critical injuries, he was eventually evacuated to the battalion aid station and on to Japan for treatment. On March 12, 1953, Duane Dewey received the Medal of Honor for his actions in saving his fellow Marines.
