On April 7, 1947, pioneering industrialist Henry Ford died at 83. The Detroit common council directed that a portrait of Ford draped in mourning colors be displayed in front of city hall for 30 days and mourning posters be placed on city buses. Ford plants were closed on the day of Ford’s funeral and all other auto manufacturers paused production for a minute on that day in sympathy.
