Some Michigan history to share with you.
On this day in 1985, Cass City, MI native Col. Brewster Shaw, Jr. (USAF) guided Space Shuttle Atlantis to a landing at Edwards Air Force Base in California after the successful STS-61B mission. In addition to the primary mission objectives mentioned in our November post, the crew also performed experiments in human physiology and in the production of pharmaceuticals in space. Col. Shaw and his crew orbited the Earth 109 times over 6 days, 21 hours, 4 minutes and 49 seconds, while having traveled 2,466,956 miles.
The second photo shows the crew of STS-61B following the landing. Col. Shaw is at the bottom watching the remainder of his crew. Col. Shaw’s uniform, flightsuit, and other donated items are on display at The Michigan Heroes Museum, and can be seen daily 10am-5pm. Honor. Respect. Remember.
