Flushing Historical Society
The Hopson School stands as one of the few remaining physical reminders of Flushing Township’s rural educational era—a time when one‑room schoolhouses anchored neighborhoods, served as community halls, and brought together the children of scattered farm families.

Daily Life in the One‑Room School
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Hopson School followed the typical rural model:
- A single teacher instructing grades 1 through 8
- Heat provided by a central wood stove
- A hand pump outside, outhouses, and oil lamps
- Spelling bees, recitations, geography drills, and community programs
One documented teacher was:
- Floren C. Banning, identified in Flushing Through the Years, Vol. I as a Hopson School teacher during the late 19th century
Her work, like that of many rural teachers, shaped the daily educational life of township children.
A Gathering Place for the Community
Hopson School served not only as a school, but also as an important center for rural families.
According to Flushing Sesquicentennial History Vol. 3:
- Free Methodist services were held in Hopson School beginning in the 1880s
- Religious meetings occurred again in 1922, led by Rev. Ralph Sterling
These accounts show that Hopson School played a broader community role long before township halls or dedicated church buildings were established in the area.
District Consolidation (1949)
The Hopson School operated independently until the statewide push toward centralized education.
The rural district chart in Volume One records that:
- Hopson School consolidated into the Flushing Community Schools in 1949, along with Caldwell, Cronk, James Graham, and Hurd
This marked the end of Hopson’s era as a functioning schoolhouse.
The Building Today — A Rare Survivor
While most rural schoolhouses of the township have vanished or been heavily altered, Hopson School remains standing.
- As of May 2025, the structure survives and is used as a private residence.
Its survival makes it one of the most historically valuable educational landmarks in Flushing Township.
