Cemetery Walk 2026 Volunteer Opportunities
Help Bring Flushing’s History to Life
The Flushing Cemetery Walk 2026 is more than a history event. It’s a community effort to share the stories of the people who helped build Flushing.
We’re looking for volunteers of all ages and backgrounds to help make this special America 250 program a success.
Whether you enjoy history, working with people, helping behind the scenes, or performing in front of a crowd, there’s a place for you on our team.

No previous experience is required for most volunteer roles.
Volunteer Opportunities
Historical Interpreters
Flushing High School Drama Club Students
Student interpreters will portray historical figures and present first-person stories at designated locations throughout the cemetery.
Responsibilities include:
- Learning a provided script
- Attending the casting call and rehearsal
- Wearing period-inspired clothing when possible
- Engaging visitors respectfully
- Helping bring local history to life
Station Support Volunteers
Station volunteers assist historical interpreters and help ensure each stop runs smoothly.
Responsibilities may include:
- Greeting visitors
- Managing audience gathering areas
- Assisting historical interpreters
- Helping answer basic questions
- Serving as backup interpreters if needed
This is a great opportunity for volunteers who enjoy helping people but prefer not to present to large groups.
Docents (Tour Guides)
Docents guide visitors from station to station and help maintain the event schedule.
Responsibilities include:
- Leading visitor groups
- Keeping groups on schedule
- Assisting with guest questions
- Helping maintain safe movement throughout the cemetery
Welcome Area Volunteers
The Welcome Area serves as the starting point for all visitors.
Responsibilities include:
- Greeting guests
- Distributing event materials
- Providing directions
- Assisting with visitor check-in
- Sharing information about the event and the Historical Society
General Event Support
Additional volunteers may assist with:
- Event setup
- Signage placement
- Water station support
- Supply distribution
- Visitor assistance
- Event cleanup
Casting Call & Volunteer Orientation
All interested student interpreters and volunteers are encouraged to attend.

Location

During the orientation, participants will:
- Learn about the event
- Meet fellow volunteers
- Review volunteer opportunities
- Receive role assignments
- Obtain scripts (if applicable)
- Receive rehearsal information
- Learn event expectations
Rehearsal & Training
A cemetery walk-through and rehearsal will be conducted before the event.
Participants will:
- Visit station locations
- Practice presentations
- Review event logistics
- Learn safety procedures
- Become familiar with the tour route
Additional details will be provided to registered volunteers.

Senior Center Volunteers Welcome
We are especially excited to partner with volunteers from the Flushing Area Senior Center.
Senior volunteers will play an important role supporting event operations, assisting visitors, and helping preserve and share our community’s history.
